"Sunburn and tanning are the most obvious acute clinical effects
of ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Photoaging and skin cancer are the
consequences of chronic exposure. It has been useful to describe
sun-sensitivity according to skin phototype, as shown in Table 89-1. It is widely assumed that sensitivity
to UVR is primarily related to pigmentation or tanning ability.
However, the relationship between skin phototype and sensitivity
to sunburn still holds on vitiliginous patches,1 indicating
that other factors are important, such as differences in DNA repair
capacity...."
