| | Epithelial tissue, or epithelium, is composed of tightly adherent cells with little intercellular space. The tissue lacks blood vessels of its own and relies on the diffusion of nutrients from the underlying connective tissue with which it is intimately associated. Epithelial cells give up their waste products to the intercellular connective tissue through which the wastes diffuse to the blood stream for their removal. All types of epithelial tissue rest on a basement membrane, or basal lamina, composed of connective tissue elements.
