Venous thromboembolic (VTE) disease is thought to be the number one cause of preventable hospital deaths, yet use of appropriate prophylaxis is suboptimal. This lecture reviews the scope of the problem, pathophysiology and risk factors, and recommendations for prophylaxis for specific types of surgery based on the most recent ACCP guidelines.
